my favorite donnie yen movie is heroes among heroes.he plays a spoiled rich kid, then is affiliated by the beggar clan, you see donnie in his up and downs when hes addicted to the opium.then he learns the drunken style and does an awesome job with drunken kung fu.

  2. Keith says:

My favorite Donnie Yen movie is SPL Kill Zone! It was a terrific blend of action, police procedural & crime drama but what puts it over the top is the climatic final fight between Yen & Sammo Hung! They went at each other like animals on the hunt against each other! One of the best fight scenes of the movie!

  3. Ben says:

I like Flashpoint because Donnie Yen plays an honest cop who has a serious flaw in that he’s often times too brutal. I like how he is able to recognize this and correct it, all the while catching bad guys.

  4. Chad Harry says:

I really have to go with Flashpoint. I enjoy all of Yens movies but Flashpoint is just a brutal movie. Its exciting, has an engaging storyline that draws you in and has that rare spark that some movies get that you never want to end. Ip Man is right there with it though. lol

  5. Nick says:

I like many of Donnie Yen’s films, but I think my favorite is Flashpoint. The story is something that really drives home about undercover cops, family, love, and of course, action! I also love Collin Chou, whom I feel is an underrated Hong Kong star that needs to do more roles like this one, even get some starring roles because he could do it. Watching the commentary on the DVD of the final fight with Donnie talking is amazing. The work they put into that fight is amazing and it shows. The movie is just a great ride all the way through.

  6. Jeff says:

Big fan of Donnie Yen… Of his most recent movies, I really like the first Ip Man movie. The fight scenes are just spectacular especially the sequence when he fights with 20 other martial art opponents. It makes you just want to go back to watch it again and again.

  7. Kyle says:

My favorite would probably have to be SPL, AKA Kill Zone. With the rather lame title of Kill Zone, I went in expecting something totally generic, not knowing much about the film beforehand. That viewing experience kinda blew me away. Donnie Yen’s awesome throughout, Simon Yam delivers one of his best performances outside of a Johnnie To film, and it was very cool to see Sammo as a bad guy. One of the things that sticks with me, though, is not the action (which is excellent), but how sad the movie is. I’m a big fan of that film.

  8. Ron Raymundo says:

SPL – Wilson Yip knew how to film Donnie Yen’s choreography. This movie made all movies coming after to step up their game.

  9. mike m says:

Donnie Yen in Iron Monkey, shaolin wonder palm enough said!!

  10. Jay says:

Iron Monkey. The action is so awesome and Yen makes a great Wong Kei-Ying.

  11. Anthony Crabtree says:

I love most of Donnie Yen’s films, even the ones which are not well received. For me, though, Zhang Yimou’s “Hero” is Donnie Yen’s best film. I’m assuming that most here have seen it, but even though Yen isn’t the central character, he has a great fight sequence against Jet Li at the beginning, and while his role is small, he does a fantastic job as usual. That, matched with the superb cinematography, makes this my favorite film that he has participated in.

  12. Adan says:

I just recently came across this website when discovering the news about the Iceman Cometh. I’ll be looking forward to looking at the content here on City on Fire.

My favorite Donnie Yen movie is Ip Man. I have to say that the movie all around is fantastic. Donnie Yen did a fantastic job playing the role of Ip Man from both acting and choreographing. Especially when Donnie Yen was fighting 10 Karatekas.

  13. Chris says:

I’ve always loved Iron Monkey. The action is a blast, a memorable end fight scene, and enough goofy humor (that doesn’t go overboard) that it is easily rewatchable. It was also my introduction to Donnie Yen. Since seeing the film, I’ve sought out his other films and definitely consider myself a fan. I was letdown that WuXia wasn’t released anywhere near me; I have driven hours to see other Donnie Yen films on the big screen.

  14. Favorite Donnie Yen film: Ip Man

Although not my first Yen film, this was the film that really hit home for me. It was a great blend of historical drama and classic kung fu moments with great choreography from Sammo Hung. Technically I think Ip Man 2 is a better film (none of the weird time jumps), but Ip Man holds a special place in my heart.

  15. Marion Buan says:

I love all of Donnie Yen’s movies… especially Mismatched Couples. He was charismatic, funny, and had amazing dance moves! If I saw this movie as a child in 1985, I would have been a fan of his since then. It is a must see, despite what any critic says. It’s a perfect feel good movie if you’re ever feeling down.

  16. Robert B says:

For me its SPL, AKA Kill Zone….ive always loved cop movies but with this one i just was blown away by the fight scenes especially the final battle..

  17. Matthew says:

My fav. Donnie Yen movie has to be a tie between Ip Man and his role in Once Upon a Time in China, I love his style of fighting and hes also a great actor.

  18. Glenn Baskin says:

Dragon Inn, though he may not be the star, that ending has left an image on my brain that cannot be erased. I was so glad I watched that movie with no idea that was going to happen and he still fights my eyes were outta my head. Excellent!

  19. Eddie W says:

Donnie Yen movies always dope. But my favorite is the movie that got me into him, “HIGH VOLTAGE”. It co-starred Filipino actor Edu Manzano, and Donnie Yen was credited as “Michael Ryan” in the Filipino release. The fights were great, but the lighting was bad. It was nice seeing a Hong Kong style film shot my fam’s homeland.

  20. Moses says:

I’ve been a fan of Donnie for years (my foray into his work was in THE KUNG FU MASTER series that I watched as a child), but if I had to narrow it down, I think I’m going to have to go with IP MAN.

I think it’s great that Donnie has been fusing modern mma technique (SPL, FLASHPOINT) with HK choreography but I’m more excited at the roles he’s been taking on. His performance in DRAGON, IP MAN and BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS were interesting, nuanced and a great stretch from his typical badass persona. IP MAN definitely was a great stretch for him, and stands heads and shoulders about most of his already great body of work.

  21. Michael Sinkus says:

I am not a fan of this genre (anymore), but a co-worker let me borrow a (Chinese) copy of very film, and I have to say it was a wonderful treat. From the cinematography to the acting, the film is way more than just a standard Wu Xia film from the 70’s and 80’s (the era in which I used to view these films). All this makes the action a little more meaningful.

I say buy the movie if you don’t win, I sure will.

  22. Andy says:

Dragon aka Wu Xia is my fav Donnie Yen movie. Love the way he acts, he showed his emitions, imo I think this is his best performance to date, as an actor.

  23. James says:

I love Ip Man. The fight scenes are some of the best in recent memory, but for me it was Donnie’s acting that really sold me on this movie. I always thought that Donnie was a good actor, but here he brings his A game and delivers a truly memorable performance.

  24. FTWMeSSiaH says:

Ip Man. Donnie Yen vs 10 Karate Martial Artists. Rolling punches, shifting and bone breaking…. Nuff said!!!!

  25. Neo says:

My favorite is Ip Man. Great story, acting, fight scenes, everything. I was impressed with how fast Donnie Yen is considering he is in his 40s.

  26. Casey Vreeman says:

Hands down, Wu Xia is Donnie Yen’s best film. When I saw his character knock out a tooth from one of the robbers, I was like “wha…” then the fight with Jimmy Wang Yu happened, and I was all like “yes!!!”

  27. Derek M says:

Iron Monkey was my first Donnie Yen film and one of the first movies that really introduced me to Hong Kong cinema so it is my favorite Yen film. I’ve watched it so many times since then and it’s a good introduction for others too. Great action, quick pace and likable characters.

  28. Annie B. says:

My favorite Donnie Yen movie is Flash Point. Up until then I never would have imagined anyone other than Chuck Norris fighting so well in blue jeans. His fighting is pure badassness. What? No more bullets? I’ll hit you with my gun! What? No more gun? I’ll kick you a lot and throw in some sub attempts. What? We fell off a building? You’re still standing, I’m still standing, let’s bang. What? Now you’re running away? Let me end you. That’s pretty effin’ epic.

  29. Jordan R. says:

I like to laugh and turn off my brain when watching movies. Shanghai Knights had all of that and as a bonus, Donnie Yen beat up Jackie Chan!

  30. Sonder says:

My favorite Donnie Yen movie was “Legend of the Wolf”. He fought multiple men of different fighting styles, and he fought a large army of people with knives…..He killed them all. Nuff said.

  31. Strider says:

Has to be Ip Man. I never liked Yen’s films until the Ip Man series. I’ve seen Wu Xia and it’s up there. Just needed a bit more action.

  32. David Knight says:

Ip Man would be my favorite. But it’s really hard to just pinpoint one film. He has been turning out great films for so long. I look forward to all the ones he has yet to make. I know they will rock.
