I agree. After all that comedy, that death and his unsurpassed rage makes LW2 a one of a kind, mainstream action flick of the 90's (or was that 89?). It's just too bad LW3 was nearly straight up comedy; even LW4 was pretty cartoony... good Jet Li was around to save it from being another part 3.

It's been awhile since I watched them both. I remember that Part 2 was a bit more slick and mainstream than Part 1. However, I thought that two of the key elements of the first film - the humor and the action - were cranked way up in LW2. It was more of what made the first movie work but bigger and better, and with Joe Pesci's added presence ("They always fuck you at the drive thru!").

The first one was darker and more interesting, perhaps, but LW2 still had that shocking death before the third act. I got a visceral thrill out of seeing Mel Gibson's unleashed rage.

I recently watched parts 1 and 2 back to back... they're both pretty good, but part 1 beats it by a couple of notches (mostly due to that excellent escape scene). I've been on a big Richard Donner kick lately. His commentaries for Superman and Superman 2: Donner cut are hilarious. He really hates the Salkinds. lol! What exactly makes you like Part 2 the most?

I was very impressed by him in Game of Death and especially Tower of Death. Just found out he passed away. Sad piece of news indeed. What I don't understand is why he stopped making movies. Also, despite being cheesy, No Retreat, No Surrender surely had its charm. R.I.P.

Haywire wasn't very good but I still think Gina Carano has potential in Hollywood.

"When the law has a job they can't handle...they need a man outside the law." No offense to Golden Harvest but that's one of the laziest taglines I've ever heard, ha ha.

Looks like Tom Selleck has imitated both Indiana Jones and James Bond...but he never got to be the real thing. He's the Rodney Dangerfield of action movies - no respect!

Cool news! It just seems like there are a lot of Korean war movies coming out lately, between this and "The Front Line." Hopefully they won't blur together for audiences.

I've been meaning to rewatch "Shiri" one of these days. It was the first Korean movie I ever saw and it blew me away at the time.

I was watching that Vin Diesel movie "xXx" on streaming last night (yeah yeah, I know, it's a stinker) and was horrified to learn that one of the stuntmen actually died doing the para-sailing stunt on that movie.

The are some things are not correct in the review, it is very common to find this kind of confusion, here some facts:
1) Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) is not Jiu-Jitsu (Japanese) the martial art created for samurais to be used in the case they couldn't use their sword (katana). The one showed in the movie clearly comes from Brazil. Jui-Jitzu is still alive in Japan.
2) In Japan, Jiu-Jitsu evolved to Judo(1882), a martial art and a sport with a guiding principal: Minimum effort with Maximum efficiency. All the techniques that didn't follow this principal were eliminated.
3) Jigoro Kano the founder of Judo, sent his disciples to different parts of the world to spread Judo. Mitsuyo Maeda went to Brazil and taught the Gracie family, Helio Gracie developed Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as an adaptation from Judo. At that time Judo was best known as Kano's Jui-Jitzu. Kano created the belt color system.
I didn't like the movie either.

1.) Mary Elizabeth Winstead is one of the most attractive actresses out there. 2.) Turn of the Screw is one of the best horror stories of all time. However, this tale has been done to death in the movies...many, many times now.

Oh and James Cameron is an asshole. He sold out long time ago. He's all about the money. He doesn't have the balls to make an R rated film because he's scared he will make under a billion dollars. It's cool he's trying to push the tech boundries but if he wants to earn my respect back he will get the Terminator rights back and make a R rated proper sequel that will get his derailed franchise back in a respectful light. Or take some of that billion dollars and make some cool fucking movies, quit being a greedy hog rich bastard. I pay taxes asshole the least you can do is make me some movies with balls.

Great review JJ! I watched this one a life time ago and found it very compelling. This was a movie of one man's triumph through his belief in his own ideals and code of honor. This was more of a drama with a martial arts back drop, I'm surprised Chiwetel has not had more high profile action roles on the market.

To each his own I say. Not a cinematic master piece, but low budget fun. Though not Rodriguez's best, I enjoyed the film as a whole. It entertained me at the time, for me the film did it's job.

Rodriguez if filling the gap with these kinds of films. No one else in hollywood is doing cool R rated films like this anymore. This kind of filth is my kind of tea, and I hope there is a Planet Terror 2.

I think that's most people's problem with Machete: the trailer was better than the movie. I respect Rodriguez but at the same time I think the guy has been resting on his laurels since "Sin City." He doesn't do anything to try to push the envelope or evolve his cinematic technique - guys like Tarantino and Fincher have long passed him by.

Instead we get something like Machete, which you pay your money to see only to find out that Rodriguez only co-directed it. The film felt painfully low-budget, even for a b-movie, and suffered from fake looking CG blood and gore. Rodrigeuz seemed way too impressed with b-players like Lindsay Lohan and Don Johnson instead of giving more screentime to Danny Trejo.

It just wasn't that funny or entertaining. If brevity is the soul of wit, Machete worked when it was just a 2 minute trailer...that's all it needs to be funny. Try to extend it to 90 minutes and it becomes really tired.

What did you expect? A spaghetti western? The trailer should of told you enough of what kind of film Machete is. I'm a big fan of Rodriguez and I enjoyed the film and I personally can't wait for another and I don't give a shit about the immigrant thing or whatever, it's just a fucking movie made for entertainment. I know Rodriguez won't pull no bullshit PG13 shit like Sly did with EX2, no selling out here.

Honestly, the first "Machete" left me feeling like I'd just taken $10 and burnt it on the ground. Not sure I'd be up for a sequel.
