Plot: A movie about the movies, "The Golden Girls" is a romantic comedy that follows the lives of screenwriter Chun Wai (Lau Ching-Wan) and two actresses who are best friends, glamorous Lulu (Ada Choi Siu-Fun) and the "plain" Mei Ball (Anita Yuen). Reviews MIGHTY PEKING MAN'S REVIEW: Lau Ching Wan and Anita Yuen star in this delightful saga of love that lasts four decades. It's 1963, Lau Chin Wan, a somewhat, talented screenwriter meets and immediately falls in love with, struggling actress, Anita Yuen. It's a no beginning, no end relationship - thanks to the rough ladder both characters climb during their career which leads to success for them both. Anita becomes a superstar. Lau becomes a successful filmmaker. Each lead a life of their own until they cross paths once again and find out how much they really mean to each other. "Golden Girls" is a misleading title for the film. Although, there is a group of "performing" girls that remain in the story - it's barely noticeable. The primary focus is Lau and Anita's character. If you've been a regular reader of my reviews, you already know that Lau Ching Wan is a living GOD to me. His versatility, screen presence and charm, not to mention his flawless acting abilities make him one of the finest performers working in film today. Anita Yuen, who also costarred with Lau in "Ce La Vei Mon Cheri" is mesmerizing enough and holds up to be as solid as her male co-star. "Golden Girls" only suffers from it's busy plot that obviously shows that too much information is squeezed in it's 143 minutes it runs. Still, it's an entertaining and touching joy ride through the hardships of true love, not to mention, a neat peak into the history of Hong Kong film making.
