"To Wong Jing's credit, his camera work seems very surehanded and probably the best thing about the film (next to the presence of Shu Qi of course)." - Gwailo

The life and loves of an Asian yuppie gets the Jing treatment and pretty much loses it's way before it gets started. The tepid love story serves as a mere contrivance to promote it's unbelievably shallow characters. Jing once again opts for the middle of the road, not knowing which way to veer. The cringe inducing ending does no justice to the story that came before it. Gawky, awkward might be the best way to describe the films feeling. To Wong Jing's credit, his camera work seems very surehanded and probably the best thing about the film (next to the presence of Shu Qi of course). Jing, again, infuses this film with his "stooge-like" aesthetic, never knowing what to do during tender moments. In some films it's welcome but here it's misplaced, in what could have been a tender, lighthearted romance. Alas, Wong Jing strikes again. GWAILO'S RATING: 4/10 |
