These two guys who have starred in a few movies together (beginning with Gen-X Cops), are now starring in their latest movie (before 2002, that is) My Schoolmate, The Barbarian But the TBS school in this film. Reminds me SO MUCH of my schoolÉ.But we don't have any fights on desks. Edward (Stephen Fung) is your typical student. He has straight "A"s and goes to a rich school. But after messing up his project and acting all "horny" to his girlfriend. He gets kicked out, after a little confusion with his mother. Edward gets sent to a low level school (aka TBS) and gets into more trouble with the students. He befriends Stone (Nicholas Tse), who used to be King of Duel at the school (You fight on 55 desks that are together. You got fans hovering over you as well. If you fallÉyou lose) But now is retiredÉ.But Mantis (Samuel Pang) wants to have one match with Stone. Just to see who really is the "King of Duel" so after awhile. Stone and Edward decide to help each other out, Edward learns to fight and Stone learns schoolworkÉ. Ok, I'll stop at that. I don't want to do a "summary review" right off the bat. But anyways, My Schoolmate, My Barbarian is an entertaining film. It doesn't take itself too seriously and that's a good thing. If it did, god knows what kind of movie it would turn into. The one thing I enjoyed most where the fight scenes. They were very entertaining, and I'm glad we see a lot of the "King of Duel" matches. Which in my opinion stand out in this film, but the ending fight in the car wash was a combination of cool and silliness. Since you have Edward "mimicking" moves from Rival Schools (you see Edward and Stone play with that game earlier on) But the things I hated in this film are as follows. Joey Yung playing Phoenix, she is quite cuteÉBut she is very annoying in the film. When she starts screaming, you just want to go deaf, never hearing a scream like that again. Well, Phoenix's friend was somewhat of a snore as wellÉ.Plus I was surprised Wong Jing never made them go naked in the movie. Since he likes to have silly things in his moviesÉhehe Now for the rest of the cast that is in My Schoolmate. They all played pretty well. Nothing was outstanding, or completely horribleÉexcept Joey Yung. Samuel Pang kicks ass as Mantis, he isn't stupid when it comes down to fighting. He's one cool talker and is basically not afraid of any man. The fight scene with him and Stone was kick ass, just seeing Mantis in his stanceÉmakes your balls cringe (yikes!) Stephen Fung has played Edward before. In Un Baisor Vole, he doesn't come close to fucking Christy Chung. But he does learn to fight in this oneÉ. In all, a very entertaining film. It has some excellent fight scenes, cool characters (especially Mantis, Stone, and Seven-Eleven) an annoying gal named Phoenix, and a guy named Big Mouth who reminds me of Dee from "Legend of Speed". BEN POPPEL'S REVIEW: I went in to this movie not expecting much. I just figured another school movie. But when I started watching the beginning credits role and I saw this was a Wong Jing film, my expectations of a silly comedy rose a little. And then the movie started, and I was saying to myself, "wow this opening fight scene is pretty cool". And after the fight scene the comedy began, and I was saying "this is pretty funny stuff, almost reminds me of a Stephen Chow flick". But then after about thirty minutes or so into the movie it was like BAM!!!!!! What happened to all the funny things that were happening. What is up with all this drama crap, I want some more slapstick. Don't get me wrong there is comedy throughout this movie but it seems like it gradually slows down as the movie progresses. One thing I was kind of surprised about though is how much I enjoyed the fight sequences. They were actually fun to watch and even slightly believable (when I say this I mean the fight scenes in the classroom, not the ridiculous nonsense at the end of the movie). The story was even kind of surprise-good, yet simple. The acting was your traditional Wong Jing overkill and a few decent moments of brilliance from Nick Tse. But for the most part this was just a silly movie, too silly at times, and not silly enough at other times, but remained interesting enough to continue watching. Throw another one in the bag for Wong Jing! BEN POPPEL'S RATING: 7/10 |
