Reviews GWAILO'S REVIEW: Thunder Cop is an action/comedy of sort's directed with bits of flash and abundant style by Clarence Fok. Fok continues to be a mystery to me. Visually impressive throughout his career and lensing classics like Naked Killer and Dragon From Russia, he also has directed some of the worst films I've ever had the misfortune or watching. Stay away from They Cane to Rob Hong Kong and The Black Panther Warriors. His output show's he's an inconsistent filmmaker and here, TC is middle of the road at best. Nicky Wu is our "thunder cop" of the title, an over zealous young officer whose zeal is constantly getting him in tight spots with the higher-up's. After a suspension, he befriends a triad boss betrayed by his own gang. Does he help the Dai lo or bring him down town? What's a thunder cop to do? TC begins to lag around the half hour mark when a cheesy love story blooms. This is where the comedy supposedly comes from, though there are little, if any, laughs. The excellent action sequences make up for the lapses in comedy and earn the film a better rating than it deserves. GWAILO'S RATING: 4.5/10 |
