Reviews

PERKELE'S REVIEW: Pre-Jackie Chan kung fu funny guy Alexander Fu Sheng stars in this post-Jackie Chan period picture directed by Lau Kar Wing (aka Liu Chia Yung), the little brother of the renowned Shaw Brothers director Liu Chia Liang (aka Lau Kar Leung). This film is also produced by Shaw Bros and it's a fine, entertaining kung fu comedy with good fighting, stupid humor, gambling, totally senseless plot (I didn't quite got it even after the THIRD viewing), spectacular sets, wooden men, cool slow motion sequences, Chinese who think people won't recognize you when you wear a narrow cloth under your nose, a stupid police officer, lots of fooling around and a guy who lives inside a book-shelf and shoots needles at random targets without no reason at all. The late Fu Sheng gives a good fighting performance but his character is not very likable (at least not after he has beaten the poor old antique shop owner [director Lau] and smashed the valuable vasesÉ just for fun!). The role of Chow Su Chee is played by Fu Sheng's younger brother Chang Chan Peng, and it's one of the very few major roles he ever got. Gordon Liu is good as always but his character [a virtuous monk] is little too typical & over-used. Wang Lung Wei proves again that he's one of the greatest kung fu villains the silver screen have ever seen and almost steals the show with his maniacal performance. But back to the point, the whole film is all pretty stupid but still goddamn enjoyable. And after all, that's just what these kung fu comedies are all about.
