Reviews

NINGEN'S REVIEW: This film's an adaptation of a manga/anime series which parodies Japanese thug culture. The main character Kamiyama is a "normal" guy who actually has his act together, but goes to one of the "bad schools" to be with his friend, the joke being that his friend is too stupid for their "low" standards, leaving him alone in the wild. In contrast to the other students, Kamiyama is the smartest at Cromartie High, and tries to guide his brethren into doing positive things for the community. But he often ends up getting them in even more trouble than they would have encountered alone.

Unfortunately, that's only the first half of the picture. The second half is mostly a spoof of sci-fi and kung fu flicks revolving around aliens trying to take over the school. If you can sit through the referential humour, you'll still find some decent comedy, but it still doesn't make up for losing its direction. You have to be a fan of the source material to forgive it, and if you're not, you're more likely to be bored sooner. Still, if you like satire without the conceit, you'll get a kick out of Cromartie High.

NINGEN'S RATING: For fans 8/10, for non-fans 6/10
