To me, this is one of the most interesting bits of entertainment news this week. That Disney would can a Gore Verbinski/Johnny Depp movie kind of blows the mind. At the same time, it’s hard to believe that a Lone Ranger movie could ever cost $250 million to make. $50 million for those two guys’ salary, maybe, but then where is the rest of it going? As someone else said, all you need is guns and horses.

Lots of speculation as to why the film was canned. Was reading that Disney didn’t think they could market a Western overseas, when they’re counting on big international box office for their films these days. What else? Supposedly “John Carter” has cost them $300 million (that seems exaggerated) due to expensive reshoots. I didn’t hear anything about reshoots on that one so who knows…oh well, interesting developments in Hollywood.

I’m really PO’ed about this one, ‘cus it sounded a lot more exciting than another POTC movie, and unlike Green Hornet ’011, wouldn’t suffer from having to be modernized.

Update 10: While nothing is verified, Deadline suggests that Disney might want Verbinski off the project.

Big mistake. Verbinski’s presence is the only thing this movie really had going for it (yeah, yeah, I know, Johnny Depp, big international box office draw).

Honestly, the changes that they’ve made, like shooting scenes with extras all at once, just sound like smart, cost-cutting measures. It’s like Hollywood has never had to be frugal before.
