THE MOVIE: Marvel Studios wants to make a film version of the crossover arc Guardians of the Galaxy. This will be Marvel’s next big team movie after Avengers. Look for the film to hit theaters in August of 2014.

Updates: According to THN, the cast of characters that will appear in the film are: Drax The Destroyer, Groot, Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora.

Total Film (via The Hollywood Reporter) reports that three-time Black List writer Chris McCoy has been tapped by Marvel Studios to work on the latest draft of the Guardians of the Galaxy screenplay, which will be based on a draft by Nicole Periman. | Marvel Studios has approached director James Gunn to helm their interstellar super hero film, Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn was chosen for his “sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror.” Gunn is known for Dawn of the Dead, Slither and Super. | Collider reports that Gunn has confirmed that he will direct the film, and he will also rewrite Chris McCoy and Nicole Perlman‘s script. In addition, Thanos creator Jim Starlin confirms that the popular Marvel villain will play a big role in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers 2.

Collider reports that Marvel is considering Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler for roles. Deadline reports that Chris Pratt (Zero Dark Thirty, Moneyball) is leading the galactic team as Star Lord. | Dave Bautista, who played Brass Body in The Man With the Iron Fists, has officially beat out Jason Momoa and other contending actors for the role of Drax the Destroyer. | THR reports that Star Trek’s Zoe Saldana is currently in negotiations to play Gamora, the green-skinned humanoid alien in Guardians of Galaxy. | Deadline reports that The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker will play Yondu.
