  1. My favorite horror movie has to be ALIEN (1979). It’s atmospheric, brutal and believable. Also has great character development.

Runners up: Psycho (1960), The Thing (1982), The Shining, Night of the Living Dead, Jaws and Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI.

  2. Ben says:

This is a tough one to answer because I don’t watch much horror, but I’d probably say The Thing (1982 version) is my favorite horror movie. The special effects are top notch, they hold up well today.

  3. The one that lingers in my mind the most is A Tale of Two Sisters (2003). The crazy twist that makes you reexamine the whole movie in an entirely different context–but arguably with even more meaning than the Sixth Sense (1999); the gorgeous production design, cinematography and direction; and a genuine horror to the film on both psychological and supernatural levels.

  4. Ron says:

Nightbreed. I just love the story when i was a kid. It was this film that made me realize I wasn’t as scared of horror movies as I thought

  5. Jeff Kerman says:

Trick ‘r Treat. It is a perfect love letter to Halloween.

  6. Lee Golden says:

As it stands, my favorite one is You’re Next. I’m not too big on horror films but I love action horror suspense films, especially with lead actresses who fight back.

  7. THE CONJURING…true unadulterated terror!

  8. Matthew A. says:

Halloween(1978) great suspense, badass story, and love the music!

  9. Ronald Oliver says:

I was going to say ALIEN (1979) for the same reasons as the Mighty Peking Man did. But I don’t want to come off as stealing his comment, since he commented before me. (BTW – great choice, Mighty Peking Man).

So I will go with the classic ‘The Exorcist’ (1973) because it’s a genuinely scary horror movie, that was/is well written, directed, great acting and character development, great practical effects, and a great score. It’s a horror classic!

  10. Nick says:

I am not the biggest horror fan, but one I could watch over and over, as cliche as it is, is the original Halloween. I love the indie feel it has, and it is genuinely a tense experience. Other first films in slasher franchises haven’t aged well in my opinion, but the original Halloween still holds up and I think it will for future generations.

  11. David says:

Have to go with Alien like a couple of others. OMG when the chest buster popped out. That was one scary movie.

And if you want to go with horror with gross out then The Human Centipede part 2.

  12. Adam S. says:

‘Suspiria’ (1977) has to up there in all time great horror films. Best description I ever read was “a candy colored nightmare,” and it is true. From the start to the finish everything fits in this film. The score by Goblin is amazing (WITCH, you know what I mean when you hear it.). The atmosphere rivets you to the edge of your seat. I still cannot watch this in the dark with the lights off. Other choices people have called out are great, too.

  13. Pierre Mosbey says:

Suspiria, easily. It’s just the most beautiful horror movie I’ve ever seen. Blood has never looked so vivid and dream-like. Perfect balance of art and horror.

  14. It’s gotta be MR. VAMPIRE! It drew on China’s own ghost lore and folk religion, to create a fun, funny, energetic, spooky masterpiece.

  15. kurt says:

Ringu – because it scares me the most out of any horror movie I’ve ever seen

  16. Devin says:

I love let the right one in! The characters are awesome, the story is griping and it is shot in a way that you don’t need subtitles to understand what is going on!

  17. Katie says:

Don’t Scare Jessica To Death is my favorite horror because of the atmosphere and vampires like I’ve never seen before.

  18. Chris Lane says:

I’d have to say Evil Dead 2 is my favorite horror movie as it still had some of the dark taste from the first movie, but added in the great comedy with Bruce Campbell.

  19. bill norris says:

Dead Alive….cant go wrong with a kung-fu priest and an electric lawn mower….

  20. Kyle Warner says:

John Carpenter’s The Thing. It’s not only my favorite horror film, it’s one of my favorite films of all time. I love the sense of paranoia, the fun characters, the monster effects, and the terrific setup of the film. Isolation is a favorite theme in horror films and it has rarely been handled better than here.

  21. Will says:

My favorite horror movie is Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. It’s fun, it’s exciting, it has great FX work. I don’t care that the zombies are kinda blue, it’s one of the most re-watchable movies I’ve ever seen.

But I’d also like to mention my favorite HK horror: Bewitched. Seems like The Boxer’s Omen gets talked about more because it’s crazier, but the relentless curses and incredible magic battles of Bewitched are exactly my cup of tea. There’s just something about a villain that drinks from a vat of bloody liquid filled with guts and dead fetuses. I wish it were more readily available for people to see.

  22. Steve says:

ET. I remember seeing it in theaters when I was 4 and covering my eyes the whole time. Not quite a horror film, but it still scares me thinking about it when I’m taking out the trash at night.
