AICN has posted the first image from Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, a dark and action-packed take on the classic fairy tale. The film stars Jeremy Renner (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) as the titular brother and sister duo, who are now all grown up and hunting witches as a daytime job. The promotional photo comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, where Arterton explains that the movie is going for a slightly tongue-in-cheek, Tarantino-esque vibe with a plenty of violence and dirty words.
Director Wirkola is most famous for his Norwegian zombie movie Dead Snow, in which a group of vacationing friends ran afoul of undead Nazis. It wasn’t a great movie, per se, but it was a fun enough ride with more than a fair share of Evil Dead influence. Perhaps he can succeed where Terry Gilliams’ The Brothers Grimm failed and deliver a fresh, modern take on an old fairy tale. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters lands in theaters this March. Expect a trailer in the next month or so.
Update: Dark Horizons notes the film has now been delayed indefinitely.
Update 2: Looks like it’s been pushed back to January 11, 2013.
Update 3: This film’s not to be confused with an upcoming Hansel and Gretel-themed episode in NBC’s Grimm.
